Family History Nerdery

So, my great-grandfather Anthony William Darter was a Methodist minister. During the 1910 U.S. Census (April), he was a "boarder" at the home of Emory and Angeline Love, parents of Elizabeth Morgan Love, his future wife so was still living at home. This made me a little suspicious as my grandpa, Thomas Eugene, was born March 1911. I'm thinking, hmm.... did my great-grandfather, the Methodist minister, have a shotgun wedding? This wouldn't be shocking in my family tree, as I can already think of 2 other instance off the top of my head. But honestly, as of April 1910, when the Census was taken, both Elizabeth and Anthony were single. So, in order for the marriage to be non-shotgun, the wedding had to take place by June 1910, to legitimize the birth of a March 1911 baby.

Well, the miracle of genealogical research, I found a marriage license for my great-grandparents. June 4, 1910, so it turns out my grandpa was a honeymoon baby, not a shotgun baby. Go them. But seriously, I love genealogy for these reasons - it's like being a private investigator! Here's a few cool resources for the genealogically interested:
  • http://new.familysearch.org -> currently, only for LDS members in certain temple districts
  • www.familysearch.org -> available to everyone, look specifically for "Research Guidance" on the right, will explain history of record keeping, etc.
  • https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Main_Page -> still in development, but in theory will tell where to find each type of record, etc.
  • www.ancestry.com -> I think they're having a limited time 2 week trial membership. Enjoy it!

That's so cool!

I wasn't able to make it to your last class. You should do another one soon. I'd love to come. :)

Thanks for the great info too.
