Day 3: Rome to Sorrento

Our day started off with a stop at Pompeii en route to Sorrento. I must be stupid or something, because I had never really heard of Pompeii before this trip, but when I tell anyone that I went to Pompeii they are like, "ooh wow that must have been so interesting!" And it was. Anyone mildly interested in history would be interested to go to that link, or various links that come up from a google search. Long story short, Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, covering a thriving city in ash and suffocating it's several inhabitants to death. This buried city was discovered in 1748, perfectly preserved.

Bathhouse - they were pretty much public bathhouses, but they were also resort-like in nature.

This is actually a "Beware of Dog" sign - it really says that in ancient Roman underneath the dog mural!

Me, daring to stand in front of Mt. Vesuvius... bring it on!

During the excavation, diggers noticed hollow parts in the ash, and realized that they were the cavities of the now decayed bodies of the victims. They decided to pour plaster into the cavities to create statue-like figures of the victims to get a grip on what they looks like. Notice how this poor kid is trying not to breath in the fumes. Pretty much all bodies looked like that.

"Fast food restaurant" - homes were too small for kitchens so townspeople gathered here. Pots kept food warm. Behind the counter is our tour guide, who was absolutely wonderful.

Later that night, we ended in Sorrento.
